According to state television, Tunisian Kais Saied won the presidential election by 76.9%.
Kais Saied, 61, was more than 50 percent of Nabil Karoui, a media mogul on trial for tax evasion.
The announcement sparked tears of joy from Saied’s followers on the streets of Tunisia. However, official results will only be available from Monday.
The independent candidate thanked the young people who “opened a new page of history” in front of their supporters at a hotel in central Tunis, shortly after the announcement of his victory Sunday.
