Journalists in Burundi Were Charged With Harming State Security

According to the Newspaper and Human Rights Watch, 4 journalists and a driver in Burundi were arrested on Saturday for harming state security. Journalists went to the northwestern of Bubanza state to report the clashes between the army and a rebel group was seen as a crime.

The government of President Pierre Nkurunziza defused many media outlets before elections in 2020.

Lewis Mudge, director of Human Rights Watch Central Africa, said that independent journalists are seen as enemies of the state by the Nkurunziza government.
