Nigeria has closed the borders of the country with all goods movements and said there is no timetable for the country’s reopening.
The closure had a significant impact on Nigeria’s western neighbor, Benin, which exports foodstuffs to Africa’s most populous country. Since the summer months, the prohibition of imported goods from land borders has increased food prices.
The closure does not affect Nigeria’s oil exports almost entirely through the country’s ports and offshore oil platforms.
It was said that all imports should now come from the ports of the country where they can be monitored more easily and get the needed revenues.
Nigeria relies on imports to feed its rapidly growing population of around 190 million, but the government is trying to support local agriculture because it wants to diversify its oil dependent economy.
Many are suspected of using their ties with the former president or encouraging them to obtain their interests or public contracts.
