Mauritania Awaits Rain Return

Since the start of the rainy season on July 13, no precipitation has been recorded in 7 of the country’s 13 regions. A situation born of climate change according to the Mauritanian
meteorological services. Wintering is slow to take hold in Mauritania.

The first rains were recorded late in mid-July in parts of the east and south-east. A worrying situation according to the meteorological services, which point to the long pauses observed between two precipitations.

“After the [rains] started, there was still a pause,” says Coulibaly Hamidou, deputy director of the National Bureau of Meteorology.

These breaks were expected to be unusually long in nature. Indeed, they have been very long.
